2009 was a truly phenomenal year for Dutch artist and Flamingo Records head honcho Fedde Le Grand. With a glittering career that includes worldwide number ones, A-list collaborations, tours in every continent, a raft of International awards and a debut artist album 'Output' that hit over 60 countries worldwide, it was a year that cemented his reputation as one of the most forward-thinking, in-demand, creative forces in Dance Music. Renowned for his global hits 'Put Your Hands Up for Detroit', 'Let Me Think About It', 'The Creeps' and '3 Minutes to Explain', Fedde set all of clubland on fire and stamped his name all over the global music charts. Weighty remixes include Black Eyed Peas front man Will.i.am, Fatboy Slim and Madonna (who used 'Put Your Hands Up…' to promote her Sticky and Sweet tour).

Since the early days his more stripped-down production had won him an elite group of fans, allowing him to experiment with a darker, more minimal Tech House sound. His pseudonym F.L.G. continues this and saw tracks 'Amplified' and 'Pink Bird' on Toolroom Records become anthems on the Underground scene, but this wasn't Fedde's first release on the label. 'Just Trippin' was a massive release that cemented Fedde's association with Toolroom at an early stage. With Fedde working more closely with Toolroom in 2010, he seemed an obvious choice to continue the Toolroom Knights series and kick start the New Year with a very definite bang.

Fedde's Toolroom Knights reflect his world famous DJ sets and explores his versatility as both producer and DJ with CD1 mixed under his F.L.G. moniker and CD2 as Fedde Le Grand. CD1 is deeper and stripped back, laying a distinctive groove in preparation for the more uplifting tones of CD2. Including an exclusive track written by Fedde, namely 'An Old Technique', CD1 includes tracks from Solomun, Noir, Saeed Younan, Joey Negro & Mark Mendes. CD2 kick starts into full on Fedde Le Grand mode with Ntfo's 'Filter' and Steve Bug's 'Swallowed Too Much Bass' before moving onto Johnstar's 'Tick Tock Track', another exclusive on the compilation. The omnipotent, historic and rejuvenated US house label Strictly Rhythm has always had a reputation for delivering quality mixes and the freshest upfront tracks. Now in its 20th year the label has earmarked the producers, DJs and international events that can continue to deliver its universal sound into the next decade.
The biggest event in the House calendar is the annual Miami Winter Music conference that occurs every March. This undoubtedly remains the epicentre of the House scene, continuing to be the place where the world gets a glimpse of the new emerging artists and tracks that will become the staple food of every reputable DJ internationally.

This year it is the turn of house legend Karizma and new blood Eddie Thoneick to select the tracks and skilfully join the beats that will ultimately reflect the sound of the conference.

Karizma is the adept Baltimore bred US house DJ that has set the standard for many over the past decade. He remains one of the most in demand DJs on the house circuit and was formerly part of the renowned Basement Boys with DJ Spen and Teddy Douglas. Imagine the sound of cereal hit by milk in the morning, only heard if you listen closely. A sound that is comforting and addictive. This kind of innocent image from a daily routine fits the music of The Go Find. It’s never offensive; it’s warm and soothing, but intriguing enough to grab your attention. Its beauty lies in small things.

“Everybody knows it’s gonna happen, only not tonight” is a celebration of sincere love. A record full of youthful innocence where the only care in your life is whether or not to give that first kiss now or later. Unfortunately the growing pains, doubts and eventual escape are inevitable. When growing up things get complicated, so no wonder it feels good to look back in nostalgia to those carefree days of youth.

Dieter Sermeus’ third record under his Go Find moniker is a more up-tempo album on which the band continues to refine and build upon their familiar sound: dreamy indie pop songs built around swirling synths, acoustic guitars and Dieter’s distinct voice. We hear a band of friends, a band of speechless understanding. Musically the band pays tribute to some of their obvious and not so obvious influences. It’s no surprise that they used to listen to Pavement in the 90ies (‘Cherrie Pie’!), but an ode to the smooth and sophisticated sound of Roxy Music (‘Heart Of Gold’) is a refreshing new turn.

The album was recorded over a period of six months in Brussels and Antwerp, each song built on a base of acoustic guitars and drums. The production is loaded with warm and melodic instrumentation, which provides the perfect background for the lyrics. Also notable are the backing vocals of Mintzkov’s Lies Lorquet (‘Just A Common Love’) and a duet with new talent Karo (‘100%’).

“Everybody knows it’s gonna happen, only not tonight” will leave you with a warm and fuzzy feeling, making you want to go back to those first days of falling in love.

It’s been a long, hard road to redemption for Gil Scott-Heron, the influential musician, poet and author, whose last full-length album, Spirits, was released 16 years ago. In the interim, he’s been in and out of jail on various drug-related offences, his taste for narcotics sapping the creative impulses that once burned so brightly. Scott-Heron’s saviour came in the unlikely shape of XL Records boss Richard Russell – the man responsible for rave classic The Bouncer by Kicks Like a Mule – who offered to produce an album by the singer during his stint in Rikers.

Their collaboration is bookended by a cracked, two-part reminiscence of Scott-Heron’s roots titled On Coming From a Broken Home, which is based around a typically fastidious piece of wordplay. There’s a wonderfully circuitous spectrum of influences at work on the song – Kanye West has sampled Scott-Heron in the past, this track is built from a refrain from the hip hop star’s Flashing Lights, which borrows from a song by Scott-Heron’s peer in the 70s socio-political music scene, Curtis Mayfield.

Scott-Heron has an intuitive way of grasping work written by others and skewing it to fit his own austere worldview. He covers Bobby Bland’s I’ll Take Care of You and Robert Johnson’s Me and the Devil, but the most surprising addition is the title track, a version of a song by downcast indie rockers Smog. Scott-Heron appropriates the piece for his own use, as a way of reintroducing himself to the world (“No matter how far wrong you’ve gone, you can always turn around,” he muses), while also addressing the past (“I had an ego on me the size of Texas. I forget. Does that mean big or small?”).

He continues to dissect the past and realign himself with the present throughout, carefully pouring all his life experience into every syllable and drawing on the triumphs and aberrations that shaped him. Meanwhile, Russell is careful never to intrude, instead using deathly silence and the dolorous thud of treated drum sounds to provide a stark backing. The one shaft of light that pierces a hole through the centre of the record is New York is Killing Me, which approaches something resembling exuberance via the upbeat clop of a handclap-driven beat.

I’m New Here is an unlikely but triumphant return, packed full of sadness, experience and an underlying feeling of someone making peace with their mistakes and regrets.

Indonesia's Dira J Sugandi made big headlines when she performed with Jason Mraz and Incognito at the Java Jazz Festival 2009. From a fan into a future star describes her journey so far by her producer Bluey after a band member gave her a microphone to sing at that concert. Now Dira is now involved in many Incognito concerts as one of the vocalists. She has also performed live with other acts, including the Yellow Jackets, Keith Martin, and the aforementioned with Jason Mraz (see them live together on YouTube).

Her debut album "Something About The Girl" is written and produced by Bluey with members of Incognito and one special guest, British soul star Omar. The album, with 11 songs, is a stylish and refreshing blend of R&B mixed with acid jazz, soulful house and bossa flavors, part of which was also recorded in Jakarta. Bluey brought Incognito collaborators Matt Cooper, Richard Bull, Simon Cotsworth and Ski Oakenful into the project, along with Dira's favourite male vocalist, Omar from the UK, to do a duet with her.

After raising the bar to unprecedented heights in 2009 with Joris Voorn and Will Saul's stunning additions to the series, EQ Recordings' Balance series returns for the new decade with yet another standard-setting mix from one of the most sophisticated and inspiring names in techno: Agoria.

The man otherwise known as Sebastien Devaud wasn’t bitten by the dance music bug until he was out of his teens, but once he began hunting imported 12"s from the US and Germany in his native France, there was no turning back. His production career began in 1999, with his debut album Blossom and first compilation following in 2003 - and it was clear even in those early days that a serious new talent was emerging. Blending the throb and groove of deeper, stripped-back techno with a keen sense of musicality, emotion and atmosphere, his is a sound that transcends beyond mere dancefloor disposability.

Agoria explains his intention for this intricate compilation: "The concept of both CDs is all about balance. Literally. In my mind a balance is not a middle position; it's a perfect equilibrium. I'm trying to be as close as possible to this idea. I have tried to find this fine line where the balance is just right." To accomplish this perfectly-weighted contrast, he's cherry-picked from a myriad of genres and subgenres in his "beat open-minded" fashion, combining a wealth of material from newcomers across the spectrum (including no less than 12 exclusives) with more established producers, classics and unknown gems from his broad musical past, and put it all together in an unconventional, challenging manner. "In the end, more than a DJ compilation, this is a manifesto of my passion for music and for mixing" he explains.

Disc 1 casts Agoria not simply as a functional dancefloor engineer, but as a musical craftsman, an arranger, a conductor. It's the sound DJing evolved - the art of composition, contrast and texture, toying with your emotion and patience and pushing and pulling your attention in different directions. We begin all beatless and atmospheric, moving through the Viennese downtempo beauty of Tosca and the haunting acoustic pop of Emiliana Torrini and onwards into Agoria's own blend of operatics and deep electronica on Altre Voci. Glimpse's Train In Austria Pt.2 catches us off guard with its intense emotion, before the helmsman ushers us unexpectedly towards organic instrumentation and disco grooves, all warm and familiar after the heady electronics that went before. A delicate, blessed-out climax lays the mix down to rest.

Disc 2 sees Agoria go for the 4/4 jugular, with more of the trademark sound that he is recognised for. But it's not quite as simple as that. Even more so than on the first mix, he combines and sequences tracks in every different way, splicing several together, reintroducing the same track twice or four times, comparing and contrasting different flavours. "I thought that to find the right balance, I needed to use all the ways of mixing. Editing tracks but also letting entire tracks play. Playing 3 or 4 times the same tracks, or spinning some for just a few seconds. Loopy or not. Exclusive, classic or covers, bizarre or easy listening, happy or trippy. 4 tracks together or just one. Loosing the listener for a minute to re-catch him the minute after. Spinning a classical music work of Jonny Greenwood at the peak time. Going up and then down. Starting and finishing with the same tracks.” Familiar names like Marc Antona, Chris Carrier and Mark Broom supply a steady throb of techno and tech house rhythms - melody percolating the mix at the right moments - leading up to a dreamy, euphoric climax, laden with the joyous pianos of Serge Santiago's re-rub of Shit Robot and Martyn's heavenly reworking of Efdemin. Two sumptuous vocal tracks round off this incredible oeuvre, the perfect finale to bring the mix back down to earth after some epic peaks.

This superb compilation is as deep and rewarding as a well-woven novel, the dénouement of the story unfolding as the mix evolves through Agoria's musical DNA. Curtis James Jackson III (born July 6, 1977) better known by his stage name 50 Cent, is an American rapper. He rose to fame with the release of his albums Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2003),The Massacre (2005) and Before I Self Destruct (2009). All albums achieved multi-platinum success, selling more than twenty-one million copies combined.
Born in South Jamaica, Queens, Jackson began drug dealing at the age of twelve during the 1980s crack epidemic. After leaving drug dealing to pursue a rap career, he was shot at and struck by nine bullets during an incident in 2000. After releasing his album Guess Who's Back? in 2002, Jackson was discovered by rapper Eminem and signed to Interscope Records. With the help of Eminem and Dr. Dre, who produced his first major commercial successes, Jackson became one of the world's highest selling rappers. In 2003, he founded the record label G-Unit Records, which signed several successful rappers such as Young Buck, Lloyd Banks, and Tony Yayo.
Jackson has engaged in feuds with other rappers including Ja Rule, Nas, Fat Joe, Jadakiss, Cam'ron, Sean Combs, Rick Ross, and former G-Unit members The Game and Young Buck. Oriental Garden, the essential compilation album series of true World parties and top-notch music fans, presents a musical mélange of catchy, powerful and intoxicating cultural crossover albums that offer a soundtrack for a genuine oriental-around-the-world experience since the beginning of 2000s. The new born double CD compilation album Oriental Garden Vol.7, just like the previous six, carries DJ Gülbahar Kültür's mark, rightfully famed as the DJ of Global Beats for inventively and seamlessly shifting between genres and cultural traditions.

Tarab is what the first CD is called, revealing its oriental-ethereal character: it is the Arabic word for "being drunk by music". The opening song on Tarab is surely a big surprise; an oriental saturated version of Johann Sebastian Bach's delightful "Erbarme Dich Mein Gott" performed by twice Grammy nominated collective Sarband, Fadia El-Hage, Modern String Quartett and Vladimir Ivanoff. Taking start with Melissa and Dr. Alban's awesome title "Habibi" (Lover), the album delves into the blazing world of oriental spiced international dance groove. KITTIE / IN THE BLACK

Kittie was the first all-female metal band that was successful on a large scale. Due to their initial sound that featured a heavy, nu-metal groove, the ladies looked to prove that women really could rock. They were often pegged as whiny girls that would disappear once they had proved their point. That was not to be, as their fifth full-length album shows the band's evolution and how they have matured, and how the music benefits from experience.

The first track, "Kingdome Come," is an immediate departure from previous albums. A slow, atmospheric piece featuring Morgan Lander's guitar noodling above an easy chord; the song sets a somber tone, and certainly a sense of the unknown and unexpected. The dream is shattered in short order, however, as the track sounds like it will transition seamlessly into the next song but instead there is a jarring jump-shift to the groove-packed "My Plague." This kind of logistical shenanigans would never have appeared on previous Kittie albums, and it shows the band is thinking about more than just a set of individual songs.

Morgan Lander still has the black metal shriek she developed over the last couple Kittie albums, but she combines it wells with spurts of a high-pitched croon to really draw each section out. Sister Mercedes Lander is back wailing on the skins too, with a dexterous and even, if not spectacular, performance. Mercedes is not helped by the fact that the drums are mixed toward the back of the sparse production. Tara McLeod is back with her rhythm guitar, and newcomer Ivy Vujic handles the bottom end on her bass. All in all Morgan is the only standout member, as she plays lead guitar and covers lead vocals, and none of the other members are good enough to get out from under Morgan's leading role.

The songs themselves are surprisingly varied. "Die My Darling" has elements of black metal mixed with late 1990's grunge and alternative rock. "Sorrow I Know" has an intro that is almost a doom-meets-death mash up, and the rest of the song is a high-pitched drone. "Forgive and Forget" has Morgan and the band moving toward death metal during the verses, while "Sleepwalking" is another song that owes its musicality to 1990's alternative rock. "The Truth" is an old-school tribute to Black Sabbath.

Every song on the album is based on Kittie's nu-metal roots, but now that sound has developed into a much slower and deeper dirge, which allows for the band's musical fancies to dance on top. The band has seen quite a change in the hard rock and heavy metal landscape over the last decade or so, and they have grown with the times. "In The Black" has an attractive style that serves Kittie well as they grapple with who they were and who they will become.

Shearwater continue to explore the beauty, menace, and fragility of the natural world - and that increasingly rare species, the indivisible album - on The Golden Archipelago, the band's most absorbing and accomplished work to date.

The new record is the third panel of a triptych that includes 2006's enigmatic Palo Santo and 2008's acclaimed Rook, albums linked by themes of environmental and personal decay and humans' impact on nature. In The Golden Archipelago, Shearwater turn to a portrait of life on islands - a world of alternating lushness and austerity, numinous silences and sudden cataclysms, and the strange flowerings of plant, animal, and human life that only arise in isolation.

These are intimate subjects for songwriter Jonathan Meiburg. As a researcher, he's camped on islands at the edges of the world, including the Falklands, Tierra del Fuego, the Galapagos, Madagascar, Nunavut, and New Zealand's Chatham Islands, and once spent a few surreal months in a remote Aboriginal settlement in northern Australia. Adding his grandfather's WWII experiences as a radio operator in the South Pacific to these travels gave Meiburg plenty of fodder for the songs of The Golden Archipelago, in which he weaves these times and places together with common feelings of wonder, grief, and defiance.

The Golden Archipelago opens with the first strains of the anthem of Bikini Atoll, sung by Bikinians in exile on the islet of Kili, where they've lived since atomic tests left their home uninhabitable. It's a fitting introduction to the gentle, eerie "Meridian", with its depiction of an air raid on an island garrison. From there, Shearwater take us on an island-hopping journey of spectacular contrasts, from the distant heights of "Landscape at Speed" to the snowy expanses of "Hidden Lakes", from the manic, shuddering confines of "Corridors" to the isolated vistas of "Castaways".

It's an album of lofty goals and great risk, but Shearwater have never been afraid to dream in widescreen. Like Kate Bush's Hounds of Love, Husker Du's Zen Arcade, or Pink Floyd's polarizing opus The Final Cut, The Golden Archipelago's beautifully and strangely-wrought musical textures summon a majesty, drama, and individuality that few current records attain, or even attempt. The band worked for months with producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Black Mountain, Polyphonic Spree, Explosions in the Sky) to capture the thrilling dynamics that have always marked their live performances, burnished by subtle orchestrations and cascades of mallet percussion. The results are singular, revelatory, and demand to be appreciated as a whole.

Islands under siege, islands of impenetrable solitude, islands of the world and islands of the mind - all are here in The Golden Archipelago, whose shores and reefs flicker and beckon, even as they crumble under rising seas.
