An artist famed for his genre defying sounds, Blame takes the next step and fuses Drum & Bass, urban beats, pop sounds and dance to create one of the most forward-thinking electronic music albums of today, rammed full of hot new talent and legendary artists from the respective scenes.

Grabbing the attention of early Drum & Bass fans with the huge rave anthems Music Takes You and Planet Neptune on the respected Moving Shadow imprint, Conrad Shafie, aka Blame became one of the most exciting names in the dance industry, breaking into the UK charts and also riding high in the dance charts, famed for his rolling liquid beats. Continually perfecting his musical direction, Blame set the trend for innovative, space age tunes such as Visions of Mars and Alpha:7 on LTJ Bukem's world renowned Good Looking Records, where he also mixed the landmark compilation Logical Progression Level 2 and decided to take the next step by setting up his own label 720 Degrees, a platform for the dancefloor oriented sounds that he was pioneering. In 2008 Stay Forever was released, a beautiful blend of beats and soaring strings that caught Radio 1's attention in a massive way. Bali, South East Asia is the next stop on the Defected destination series. Home to the Internationally renowned Junction House Music Festival. Originally developed in 2004 by European house music enthusiast Gian-Luigi and Indonesian DJ/Producer Anton Wirjono. Both shared the love of the mystery & beauty of the island, a vision of creating a meeting point in Southeast Asia for the international house music community, as well as a platform for the promotion of emerging talents.

The success and recognition drawn by the festival has not been confined merely to those dream-like tropical Balinese shores. The Junction's first Tour (2006) carried the distinctive spirit and unique vibes of The Junction to Shanghai with DJGregory & Anton Wirjono, whilst a thrilling winter performance in Gstaad, Switzerland, by DJ Claude Monnet marked the first appearance of The Junction in Europe.

The Junction is increasingly becoming a global reality, especially with this years partnership with the world's premier house music label Defected Records. The double CD is mixed by DJ Gregory, one of the first DJs to support the Junction & Indonesia's own Anton Wirjono. It is a glimpse of a Junction experience, from sunset to late night. It is time for the world to discover Bali & The Junction Festival.

CD1 is crafted by the original French beat maestro; DJ Gregory - 20 tracks, cut, spliced, mixed and jammed together in the way only Gregory can. From the tough jackin International sounds of 'Messe Messe', 'Dama S Slaon' (Gregory's own productions), to the new "French kid on the block" French Fries, the cheeky Uner bootleg of ATFC's chart topping 'Bad Habit', Nottingham's deep house dons 'The Inland Knights' and Quentin Harris and Ultra Nate's New York anthem 'Give It 2 U'. Gregory also digs deep into the Strictly Rhythm vaults to unearth the forgotten 'OK Alright' by Buddah Khan...one of Gregory’s favourite all time Strictly Rhythm tracks. CD2 is mixed by local Junction resident and Festival founder DJ Anton Wirjono. Defected have always been known for nurturing and showcasing new, rising International talent and Anton is no exception. As a winner of Best DJ at numerous Indonesian dance music awards, the creator of the Junction Bali Festival, Jakarta Movement and a local ambassador for Apple, Nike and Sony - Anton is clearly a man with his finger on the pulse in South East Asia. His mix for the Bali compilation fuses brand new releases alongside older records that have become staples of his weekly residency and classics for the local clubbers and their scene. Easing us in with an old Karizma production 'The Way' Anton credits this as "A perfect opening track for a Bali beach party". Having taken the electronic side of the 80s to new heights with the near 700,000 selling Anthems Electronic 80s, Ministry Of Sound now presents the more soulful side of the decade with 80s Groove, a genre born from the legacy of disco.

The beats were slowed down and the basslines cranked up, giving the UK dancefloors anthems that still resound today. It was one of the most funky and feel-good periods of club music, producing classics from the likes of Chaka Khan, Jocelyn Brown, Sister Sledge, The Jacksons, Mantronix, Luther Vandross and Earth, Wind & Fire. In 2009, Ministry Of Sound relaunched their famous Trance Nation brand - the definitive trance album series - with Britain's biggest DJs, Above & Beyond; for the next instalment they’ve turned to Andy Moor, someone who's become one of the scene's leading lights in recent years.

Nominated for a Grammy via his remix of Delerium's 'Angelicus', Moor is one of the most respected producers in the genre, and whose substantial talents have earned him a vast catalogue of accolades. Recently nominated for the 2009 DJ Awards, Andy is rapidly scaling the DJ Mag's Top 100, currently placed at No.15.

He's produced and remixed a huge variety of artists, from Paul Oakenfold, Brian Eno, Tiesto, and Arthur Baker to Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, and beyond. This year, the Loveparade, with its 20-year tradition is bringing life into the streets of Ruhr Metropolis Duisburg.

All together they are celebrating the event of love, peace and tolerance and are unifying their social distinctions in another episode of the world's biggest and most clamorous street raves.

Music For Cocktails is back for its hopefully lucky 13th edition. Following on from our recent Fashion Show and Metropolitan themed releases we decided to move things away from the big city and head off to the hite Isle? This edition mixes up the Balearic early evening grooves that the Island is famous for with jazzier grooves and soul jazz proceedings.

Things open up with Block 16 and the string laden ind An Oasis?with fellow Nuphonic label mates, Fug, on the mix. Fug also contribute their own smouldering slow burning Thin Air. London based collective, Sunharbour, deliver us a tasty upfront exclusive with their soulful instrumentation in The Treat. In an era of laptop production their pure and real soundscape of brass, strings and smooth vocals makes a firm impression. Chillout overlord, Chris Coco, makes a welcome appearance with the tabla jazz grooves in Time To Love. Marcel and Black Jazz Chronicles also contribute some sunset swing.

Just to mix things up a bit, Slovenians Ichisan and Nakova turn in a slice of light hearted Yugo Disco with To Je To. Fellow Slovenian, Sare Havlicek, gives us some kitsch cocktail grooves with his special mix of the summer hit White Russian. Mauro Picotto is an Italian DJ who began his career in 1984, at the age of eighteen, at a club in Piedmont called Top Sound. Following his studies he devoted himself full time to his passion as a DJ and in 1988 he became a finalist in the Italian DMC. In 1989 he won the Walky Cup Competition, broadcast on TV, which enshrined him as the best Italian DJ.
The same year he devoted much of his time to the production of his first album as R.A.F., and he soon became one of the leading producers at Media Records, of which he would eventually become a partner. In the meantime he began to produce himself, releasing massive tracks including Bakerloo Symphony, Iguana and Komodo to name a few, though his fame is mainly due to Lizard, a track that turned into a musical style, receiving awards and accolades from all territories, pushing Mauro to the Olympus of the Top 10 most popular DJs in the world.
In 2001 he began his metamorphosis, leaving Media records and creating Bakerloo and the label Alchemy with Riccardo Ferri. His productions would vary in genres from dance to trance, the most sophisticated techno to an evolution of all that is homemade music.
In 2003 Mauro Picotto created Meganite - Electronic Music Lifestyle - a successful club party linked to the best DJs of the moment. For the Meganite events he has had on his side top artists known today as Chris Liebing, Marco Carola and Adam Beyer, all playing alongside Mauro as Meganite resident DJs. Since the very beginning, the selection of artists chosen for Meganite has been of the highest quality for an evening mainly based on innovative electronic music, a cocktail of pure energy and emotion.
Mauro Picotto has released over 600 productions and numerous remixes, and to date he has sold over six million copies worldwide. He has played in best clubs with the most famous Djs, as well as having participated in all the major events, from Love Parade to Creamfields, MTV Festival, Winter Olympics in Turin, Ultra, Time Warp and Awakenings.
In 2010 Mauro will release his new album, which anticipates his impeccable and unique style for dance music lovers.

NAOMI / THE BIG SHAPES

The British star producers Xenomania (Pet Shop Boys, Sugababes) recently asked Naomi for a sample (they got it); Naomi's three year old fan favourite "Needle On The Record" is a constant seller in the US iTunes Store; their Myspace and Facebook pages are brimming with love letters from Russia, Mexico, Texas or Taiwan. In their native Germany they are still something of a best-kept secret, regardless of consistently euphoric press reviews, but this might well change with The Big Shapes, their new, fifth Album on Mole Listening Pearls.

The abundance of ideas, the songwriting, the attitude - everything has grown bigger, louder and sharper in the Naomi universe. Bernd Lechler and Nico Tobias still show the odd fit of incurable melancholy, but this time any world weariness comes clad in choruses that make you want to shout "Holy Kylie!". The overall sound of the album reminds one of... well, nothing else, really. Massive backbeats carry scratchy guitar riffs, buzzing synths cut through gentle electric piano lines as the Berlin duo digs deep into the pop vocabulary of the past four decades. “Fujiyama“ is an electro blues with elegiac Melodica and a downright symphonic final, “Candy Floss“ is a lazily stomping contemporary funk pop monster, and what happens in “Hello Fever“ after a soaring cosmic intro could almost be labeled as prog rock.

The thing is, Naomi never play it safe here. They seem to intentionally provoke the coolness police, casting away any tasteful cleverness of comparable indietronic acts and, smiling quietly, they lay it on thick. The Big Shapes draws on the forbidden side of the Eighties (the Phil Collins drums on "Morning Belle"), mischievously quotes heavy metal guitar lines (as for a few bars in “Dragon Tree“), and makes nods toward Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode as well as Chic and the psychedelic Beatles. Reviewing their last album, Aquarium, Rolling Stone magazine described Naomi as “wondrous“. They still are. Just this time with a bang.

The two-disc Anjunabeats Volume 8 compilation is exactly how trance in 2010 should be. A journey showcasing the full spectrum of Above & Beyond's sound, the compilation takes in electro-influenced grooves, deeper trance and hypnotic progressive textures alongside their trademark euphoric anthems.

Above & Beyond themselves offer a taste of their long awaited second artist album through the instant, emotional highlight 'A Thing Called Love', while their debut collaboration with respected German duo Kyau & Albert ('Anphonic') provides a driving, upbeat club monster that will be sending message boards, clubs and stadia crazy for months to come.

With over 20 separate artists featured, Anjunabeats Volume 8 is also a testament to the vital transatlantic family that the label now represents. Ascendant talents like Arty, Aruna and 7 Skies inspire fresh excitement. 그리고 7월에 이어지는 매머드 급 프로젝트의 네 번째 결과물은 흥겨움으로 가득한 싱글 앨범 'Can't Stop Lovin' You'.

6월 콘서트를 통해 팬들에게 미리 선을 보여 갈채를 받은 이 곡은 이번 싱글 앨범에 다채로운 버전으로 담기면서 콘서트에서보다 더욱 폭발적인 반응을 일으킬 것으로 예상된다.

플래닛 쉬버(Planet Shiver), 슈프림 팀(Supreme Team) 등 인기 DJ와 힙합 뮤지션이 가세하면서 브라운아이드소울의 복고 소울 사운드와 힙합, 일렉트로니카의 최신 사운드가 결합, 국내 음악에서 접할 수 없었던 최상의 감성을 접할 수 있기 때문이다.

덧붙여 매머드급 프로젝트의 마침표를 찍을 다음 정규 앨범의 재킷 디자인을 엿볼 수 있고, 세 번째를 마지막으로 하나로 완성되는 앨범 재킷 디자인 또한 이번 싱글을 통해 맛볼 수 있는 빼놓을 수 없는 재미다.

멤버들은 이렇게 얘기한다. '싱글 앨범의 묘미를 제대로 보여주는 작품이 될 것이며, 우리 안에 살아있었지만 그동안 보여주지 못했던 음악의 한 부분을 느끼게 해 줄 것이다.'

Soul의 원형(原形)으로... Back to the Soul Origin!

'Can't Stop Lovin' You' 제목만 들어도 떠오르는 뮤지션이 있다. 바로 소울의 원형을 보여주었던 레이 찰스(Ray Charles). 1950년대 샘 쿡(Sam Cooke)과 함께 소울 장르의 태동을 이끌었던 그의 음악은 당대 인기 팝 포맷이었던 두왑 쿼텟(Doo Wop Quartet: 1940~1960년대 유행한 4인조 보컬 하모니 장르)과 어울리면서 모타운(Motwon) 사운드로 발전하고, 마빈 게이(Marvin Gaye), 스티비 원더(Stevie Wonder)라는 레전드급 소울 뮤지션들의 탄생에 영향을 미쳤다.

강성(强聲)이라 불리는 호소력에 두왑의 달콤한 하모니, 브라스의 흥겨움, 리듬감이 더해진 이상적인 음악 '소울'. 갈색 눈의 4인이 만들어내는 음악은 그렇게 '소울의 원형'으로 방향을 정조준하고 있다.

이전 두 번의 싱글 앨범을 통해서도 느낄 수 있었던 소울의 복고를 향한 행보는 이번 곡을 통해 더욱 노골적으로 드러난다. 전형적인 60년대 소울뮤직의 악기구성을 재현한 사운드와 브라스 위주의 흥겨운 올드스쿨 그루브는 그저 멋진 복고를 넘어 한국적 알앤비 발라드의 단조로움에 던져진 혁명적 사운드라 할만하다.

레이 찰스의 대표곡인 'I Can't Stop Loving You', 어스윈앤파이어의 'Shining Star'가 곡의 가사 안에 살포시 담겨 있는 것... 이런 음악적 방향성을 재치 있게 표현한 것이 아닐까?

정통 소울을 향한 방향성... 하지만 이번 싱글이 특별한 이유는 네오소울(Neo-Soul)을 넘어선 포스트소울(Post-Soul)의 미래적 성향을 함께 보여주고 있기 때문이다.

인기 힙합 듀오 슈프림 팀과 국내 최고의 실력을 자랑하는 일렉트로니카 프로듀싱 팀 플래닛 쉬버가 참여한 두곡의 'Can't Stop Lovin' You'의 믹스 버전은 일렉트로니카의 몽환적 공간감과 스카(Ska), 레게(Raggae) 사운드가 혼합된 오묘한 흥겨움으로 채워져 있다.

브라운아이드소울의 기존 음악에서 접할 수 없었던 레알 신선한 사운드. 멤버들이 이야기한 '자신들 안에 있지만 보여주지 못했던 음악'이 이 곡들을 염두에 두고 한 말이 아닐까?

주인공이 오히려 코러스가 된 듯한 주객전도의 효과... 앞으로 브라운아이드소울의 음악 스펙트럼이 한 없이 넓어질 수 있음을 예시한 이번 곡은 음악 자체도 매력 가득하지만 여러 가지 면에서 가치를 부여할 수 있다.

레전드가 되어가는 브라운아이드소울

대중적 인기를 발판삼아 정상에 오른 천재 뮤지션들은 정상에 서서 다양한 음악적 시도들을 하게 된다. 음악과 자신의 격을 높이기 위한 다양한 시도들... 어떤 이들은 그 과정에서 대중성을 잃어 사라지고, 어떤 이들은 그러한 시도들 덕에 레전드(Legend)의 칭호를 얻게 된다.

폭발적인 소울 창법을 자랑하는 가창력의 가수 나오미가 신곡 [Storm]을 발표한다. 그녀는 첫번째 미니앨범 [몹쓸사랑], 두번째 미니 앨범 [사랑인데]에 이어 SBS 수목 드라마 '산부인과'의 러브 테마곡 [You are my everything]에 이르기까지 뛰어난 가창력으로 많은 젊은 층, 특히 가수를 지망하는 학생들의 애창곡으로 인정 받아왔다.

나오미의 이번 앨범은 프로듀서 주영훈이 작사, 작곡하고 루머스가 불러 98년 공전의 히트를 기록한 [Storm]을 리메이크해 화제다. 98년 발표 당시 홍보를 전혀 하지 않았음에도 불구하고 다운타운과 클럽가를 중심으로 큰 인기를 얻어 노래방 필수 애창곡으로 불려졌던 음악이다. 98년의 음악을 2010년 흐름에 맞춰 재편곡 되어 더욱 현란해진 신디사이저의 선율과 리듬이 흥을 돋우며, 나오미의 파워풀한 가창력과 H-유진의 경쾌한 랩이 더해져 올 여름 더위를 한방에 날릴만한 시원한 음악이다.

두번째 수록곡 [이유 같지 않은 이유]는 박미경의 히트곡을 리메이크 하였는데, M-net의 [The Pub]에 박미경이 출연할 당시 [이유 같지 않은 이유]를 박미경 앞에서 직접 부른 나오미에게 이제껏 수많은 가수들이 이 노래를 부르는 것을 보았지만 최고의 가창력이었다고 극찬을 하며 이번 앨범의 수록을 흔쾌히 추천한 일화가 있다. 박미경은 그 자리에서 나오미의 열창에 반해 언젠가 함께 듀엣 곡을 만들어 부르자고 제안까지 하여 그녀에 대한 애정을 나타냈다.

세번째 수록곡 [ You are my everything]는 인기리에 방영된 장서희 주연의 SBS 수목 드라마 '산부인과' 삽입곡이고 그 외에도 이준기 주연의 MBC 수목드라마 ‘히어로’의 러브 테마곡 [그게 나에요]와 애닲은 국악기의 선율이 매력적인 동양적 발라드 [난 줄 아오]도 많은 이들에게 나오미만의 파워풀한 소울 창법을 맛을 느끼기에 충분하다.
