| Aged 22 and already a rising star, massively talented south Londoner Rox releases her stunningly soulful debut album 'Memoirs' on Rough Trade. at 5 years of age, Roxanne Tataei began singing in the church's of south London and spent most of her school holidays touring with the national youth theatre. even then it was clear that Rox was destined for big things and this year will be the culmination of a lifetime of burning passion and hard work. commissioner Gordon (Lauryn Hill's 'The Miseducation of' album) and Al Shux (producer of Jay-Z's 'Empire state of mind') worked with Rox on her debut album. Standouts are 'I Don't Believe' and 'My Baby Left Me' which are infectious and instant 60's style soul and single 'No Going Back' which is a gospel-tinged Motown-Esque stomper. the biggest influence on her lyrics are love, tragedy and all that other good stuff that makes art enjoyable, while musically she draws on gospel, country and R&B, and artists as varied as Alanis Morissette ('For The Teenage Angst') to Eva Cassidy ('She kept Me In Touch With My Emotional Side'). |
